  • What is SpamSucks and how does it work?

SpamSucks uses a technology designed to significantly reduce the amount of SPAM (junk-mail) received. SpamSucks combines a "whitelist" (for known/trusted senders), a "blacklist" (for undesired senders), and a cryptographically enhanced confirmation system (for unknown, but legitimate senders). SpamSucks strives to be more effective and less time-consuming than traditional filters.  With SpamSucks, unrestricted access to the user mailbox can no longer be assumed, a premise which spammers rely heavily upon.

The way SpamSucks thwarts incoming junk-mail is simple yet extremely effective. The user maintains a "whitelist" of trusted contacts which are allowed directly into his/her mailbox. Messages from unknown senders are held in a pending queue until they respond to a confirmation request sent by SpamSucks. Once they respond to the confirmation, their original message is deemed legitimate and is delivered to the user. Updating the whitelist insures they won't have to confirm future messages. SpamSucks can even be configured to automatically whitelist confirmed senders. This methodology has the advantage of being very selective about what it allows in, while at the same time permitting legitimate, but previously unknown senders to reach the user.

Traditional anti-spam technical countermeasures are based upon maintaining a "blacklist" containing e-mail addresses, domains, and/or network subnets of known junk-mailers. Or worse, a "profile" of message headers and message body text that fits the software's idea of what a piece of SPAM looks like. The problem with this approach is that spammer's intrusion techniques are evolving as fast as your prevention techniques are, so the battle is never ending. Maintaining the blacklist is often just as time-consuming as pressing the "Delete" key on the easily recognized junk messages. If wasted time is your biggest complaint with junk e-mail, you can see why this traditional methodology is flawed. The chance of accidental "false positives" is also significantly higher with this more complex approach. If you really want effective and reliable SPAM control, you need something like SpamSucks that doesn't rely on heuristics that spammers can work around.

Will SpamSucks work with my E-mail account

Yes! SpamSucks will work with the majority of standard POP3 E-Mail servers. If you are concerned, you may check the compatibility during the registration process. The address in most cases follows a pattern similar to the following: pop.domain.com, pop3.domain.com, mail.domain.com, or domain.com

Does SpamSucks work with AOL, Yahoo, or Hotmail accounts?

SpamSucks is compatible with Yahoo (paid) and Hotmail E-mail accounts, but not AOL or MSN. Generally speaking SpamSucks will be compatible with any web based email account provided that the service offers POP3 access. Often web based E-mail services provide POP3 access at additional charge such as the case with Yahoo.

What operating systems will SpamSucks work with?

SpamSucks is OS independent. It works with all operating systems that can run standard email programs.

Will there be any changes in the way I send or receive E-mail?

No! You will continue to send and receive E-mail the same way you always have. Your E-mail address will not change and there is no need to sign up for another E-mail account. You will still be able to use the same E-mail client and keep all your existing E-mail rules/filters. The only difference is that you will receive virtually no spam.

SpamSucks checks your E-mail every few minutes. This guarantees that the majority of spam will be removed prior to you collecting your E-mail. To increase the effectiveness of SpamSucks your E-mail client can be set to pre activate SpamSucks with almost 100% removal success. This is the recommended mode of operation, particularly for minors. Please see our tutorial on how to set your E-mail client to work in this way.

Will SpamSucks still work if I check my E-mail frequently?

SpamSucks can remove up to 100% of SPAM even if you check your E-mail frequently. However to do this you must install an additional account in your E-Mail client to pre-activate SpamSucks, otherwise you will be downloading SPAM before SpamSucks has an opportunity to filter your mail. Similarly if you are using a broadband connection and your preference is to leave your email client open you should install this additional account.

Will I be able to view messages marked as spam and undelete them if necessary?

Yes! when you log into your SpamSucks account, you will see a link at the top called "JunkMail" This page lists all the deleted messages which you can undelete and send back to your E-mail account, or permanently delete them by selecting which messages you want to delete and pressing the "Delete Selected Messages" button. You may set the number of days that messages are stored in your JunkMail Folder from 1 to 3 days in the configuration options. Messages older than 3 days are automatically deleted. We may consider increasing the length of time messages are available for review depending on user feedback.

What is the format of the challenge message that 'New Senders' receive?

Messages from unknown senders are held in a pending queue until they respond to a confirmation request (challenge message) sent by SpamSucks. The format of the confirmation request is as follows:

    ATTENTION!
A message you recently sent to a SpamSucks user with the subject " test" was not delivered because they are using the SpamSucks anti-spam service. Please click the link below to confirm that this is not spam. When you confirm, this message and all future messages you send will automatically be accepted.

    http://spamsucks.com/verify.phpl?m=381&v=d00299770c6a34asdhSSFgsg

(Where ''test'' is replaced with the original subject of the message.)

Most spam is sent by automated programs, which are not able to complete the verification process. However, if you do receive email from a sender from whom you do not wish to receive email, you may simply block them explicitly in which case E-mail will be bounced.

Once approved can a 'New Sender' then send me SPAM?

Once an unknown sender has been verified as legitimate, any future messages will be delivered without intervention from SpamSucks provided that the content of the messages adheres to your filters. In other words undesirable content from approved senders will be subject to the rules of the SpamSucks filters and may be removed to the Junk Mail Folder for approval or deletion. If you would prefer to receive mail from legitimate senders, irrespective of the content, then this option can be disabled.

How do I enable or disable SpamSucks?

To enable SpamSucks, log-in to your account and open the configuration page and select the "Enable SpamSucks" checkbox or deselect to disable the service.

How do I update my account information or change my password?

If you change your ISP or email provider you will simply need to update your server information and email address using the forms found in the configuration section after log-in. Similarly for passwords or other personal information. SpamSucks allows for up to two E-Mail accounts to be monitored for SPAM.,/p>

What can I do to ensure the security of my account?

    1. Choose a secure password. You may use uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and other characters.
    2. Be sure to log out of your SpamSucks account by pressing the "Logout" button.
    3. If you do not wish to use SpamSucks any longer, we suggest you delete your account rather than abandoning it.

    Does SpamSucks support other languages?

Yes! SpamSucks does support other languages. Challenge messages can be sent to unknown senders in the appropriate language determined by information contained in the E-mail header. The default language is English and the option to respond in other languages can be activated through the configuration page after log-in. We welcome any assistance that our users can provide in the translation of the 'challenge message'.
